Custom yoga and studio activewear manufacturer guide covering fabric, fit, and MOQ

Custom Yoga and Studio Activewear: Fabric, Fit, and MOQ for Fitness Brands

Studio and gym brands ordering yoga wear for the first time usually specify the wrong side of the fabric equation. They focus on softness and stretch, which any nylon-spandex blend delivers, and miss the two things that actually determine whether the product survives a real class: opacity under stretch and recovery after repeated washing.

Nylon-spandex vs polyester-spandex

Both blends stretch four ways and feel similar on the roll. The difference shows up in wear.

  • Nylon-spandex has a softer hand feel and better colour vibrancy, which is why most premium studio leggings use it. It is more expensive and slightly less durable against friction from mats and equipment.
  • Polyester-spandex holds its shape longer under heavy washing and resists pilling better, at a lower fabric cost. It has a slightly cooler, less premium feel against skin.

Neither is wrong. The choice depends on whether your brand is positioned at a premium studio price point or a value gym price point.

Squat-proof opacity: the test buyers skip

Fabric that looks fully opaque flat on a table can become see-through once stretched across a body in a squat position. This is the single most common complaint studios report about leggings they sourced without proper opacity testing. Ask your manufacturer for a stretch-opacity test on your actual fabric weight and colour before approving bulk production, not just a flat swatch. Darker colours and heavier GSM (above 220) generally perform better under stretch.

Four-way stretch and why it matters for yoga specifically

Yoga movements load fabric in directions regular activewear rarely sees; deep twists, full extensions, floor work. Two-way stretch fabric will restrict range of motion in these positions even if it feels stretchy standing up. Confirm four-way stretch is specified, not assumed, when requesting fabric options.

Product types studios and fitness brands order

  • Full-length and cropped leggings
  • Sports bras and crop tops with built-in support
  • Yoga shorts and biker shorts
  • Lightweight flow tops for studio wear

Branding on stretch fabric

Screen printing can crack on heavily stretched fabric over time. For yoga and activewear, heat-transfer vinyl or sublimated panels hold up better because they move with the fabric rather than sitting rigid on top of it. If your logo needs to survive years of squats and stretching, specify a stretch-compatible branding method upfront rather than defaulting to standard screen print.

Starting small: MOQ and the sample process

New studio and fitness brands often want to test a small first run before committing to a full colour range. Minimum order is 20 units per design, which is workable as a single-colour test batch. Approve a physical sample and wear-test it yourself in the actual movements your customers will do before scaling to a full production run.
